The Mountain Retreat in the lakes of southern New Zealand by Fearonhay Architects is a modern twist on a traditional style. The open living area has wood paneling and concrete floors, but the exterior has traditional stone cladding. The house is low impact, affording plenty of emphasis on the natural scenery. One enters the small home from a patio roof, engaging it like a primortal cave. Nevertheless, sweeping windows punch through the stone for an inside/outside relationship. The materials are honest and permanent, achieving a function without breaking the human relationship to the environment.
