US Embassy in Beijing

Second only in size to the new embassy in Iraq, the United States Embassy in Beijing by SOM opened just in time for the Olympics, with a visit by President Bush. The enormous complex sprawls 10 acres and 8 stories. The luxurious interior displays $800,000 worth of art by Robert Rauschenberg, Yun-Fei Ji, and Louise Bourgeois. SOM sought a "secure space that is both welcoming and respectful of local traditions." The massive site was grouped into "neighborhood" with simple geometrical structures and Eastern courtyards. The $434 million U.S. Embassy was dedicated by George Bush on August 13, 2008.
