Teruel Urban Development, Spain

David Chipperfield and Barcelona’s b720 Arquitectos won this competition for a connection from the train station to the promenade "Paseo del Ovalo" through an ancient stone city wall in Teruel, Spain. This World Heritage site of Madejar architecture, a small town, needed a delicate intervention.

Completed in 203, the design improved the space directly before the promenade with street furniture and plantings around minimalist pathways. A tall trumpet-shaped cavity was inserted into the wall, with elevators in a lobby that connect to a modern square in the old part of town.
