Hitoshi Abe designed this 2002 Town Centre for Reihoku, Japan. This project included close cooperation with the residents and city leaders for over three years. In the end, the rooms were left unspecific as they couldn't agree on the programs. Local craftsmen did much of the construction.
The dark cedar creates an unusual expanding form in the middle of the green site, much like an ancient sacred structure. The interaction with glazing and the concrete base still provide a formal aesthetic.
