Whitney Water Purification Facility, New Haven Connecticut

This distinct metallic form is the only manifestation, while 30,000 ft2 lies under the earth with a park above. The inverted water drop form extrudes 110m with glazing at either end for the picturesque views. Skylights above illuminate white interior hallways. Gravity pulls the water from the lake into the purification system.

An energy-saving heat pump system and recycled building materials also helped push this project into the AIA's top ten green projects. This design by Steven Holl was completed in 2005.
