Aires Mateus Architects designed the Centro de Artes de Sines which opened in 2005. It stands at main street's entrance into historic downtown, also introducing the city to the ocean. It contains art exhibition rooms, a municipal library, Historical Municipal Archives, and a 191 seat Auditorium.
The marble facade fits into the context of a nearby castle. The street has similar paving. Glazing at street-level invites the visitor inside from the heat. Large sweeps of interior skylights arrange circulation and illuminate the artwork. (It's impressive when the architect can persuade the curators to use natural light in the gallery)
