Seattle Central Library, Washington

Project Manager Rob Zimmerman of LMN told me in a private interview that the Seattle Public Library, such an innovative building, was achieved through anything but smooth sailing. So it was essential that Rem Koolhaas was so uncompromising.

Koolhaas' team fullfilled Seattle's yearning for a totally innovative library by first reshaping what a library is. Through hyper-rationalism, critical analysis, and functional problems, the resulting machine was unexpected and downright offensive. The signage, for example, makes sense but is no unusual that visitors don't really find it helpful.

An inner core of magnificent cantilevers stands structurally free from a skin of glazing. The levels are arranged from a new, all-inclusive program of media resources, desired views, and adjacencies. The book keeping system is shown as a naked machine, and the book reading spot is expanded into a large "livingroom for the city."
