Cell Brick House, Tokyo

An alternating grid of ceramic tile covering steel blocks and glass blocks adorns this creative residence. Atelier Tekuto designed the cell brick house in 2003.

Tekuto uses new technology to put a contemporary spin on Japan's once-forgotten sensibility of light and environmental response. While serving as structure, the walls' steel boxes also serve as storage containers for the interior. It occupies only 33m², yet it is three stories tall.

Windows bring light throughout the space and material serves program as well as structure.
