Hundertwasserhaus, Vienna Austria

Friedensreich Hundertwasser designed the Hundertwasserhaus Wien in Wien, Austria. Architects Joseph Krawina and Peter Pelikan realized the project, completed in 1986.

The colorful and organic surfaces are covered by 250 bushes and trees. Intellectuals and elites mainly occupy the pricey apartments and office units. Oddly placed mosaic tiles and falling fountain water bring a surreal atmosphere.

Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, University of Minnesota Minneapolis

Frank Gehry designed the Weisman Museum at the University of Minnesota in Twin Cities Minnesota. The typically metal building strategically places windows which overlook the Mississippi river and downtown Minneapolis. It was completed in 1993.

The broken up stainless steel facades seem to draw inspiration from the rocky banks of the river. The metal meets terra cotta colored brick on the city side to echo the history of the city. This interpretation of the natural and built environment is appropriate for the modern art inside.

Montjuic Communications Tower, Barcelona Spain

Santiago Calatrava designed the Torre Telefónica telecommunication tower in Barcelona, completed in 1992 for the Summer Games.

The twirly tower meets the ground very delicately at a pin-point, seeming to float in the air like a twisted paper clip. The base is covered with broken shards with Gaudí's technique of mosaic. Majestic fountains stand before the stair procession to the tower.

Dargan Bridge, Dundrum Dublin Ireland

Dundrum diverted much of its road traffic from main street with a new bypass behind the West Side. At the same time, the city built a Luas tram line for mass transit, with this long suspension bridge carrying it over a modern street intersection.

The bridge by Graham Construction crosses the R112, R117, and Slang River. Built in 2002, it commemorates architect William Dargan.

Sharp Centre for Design, Ontario College of Art & Design Canada

Alsop Architects and Robbie/Young+Wright Architects designed the Sharp Centre for the Ontario College of Art and Design, completed in 2004. It is a raised "table top" to open up the public urban space below.

The supporting columns and elevator are brightly colored while the building itself is checkered black and white. It is a bold statement of the digital and modern in the midst of Victorian college buildings.
